Goals
What we want to achieve
There is a broad international consensus, that development cooperation needs to become more effective. The Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness, the Accra Agenda for Action and the Busan Partnership clearly define the current shortcomings of the aid system and highlight the fundamental importance of transparency to overcome these shortcomings.
Transparency and accountability are essential elements for development results. They lie at the heart of the Paris Declaration, in which we agreed that countries and donors would become more accountable to each other and to their citizens.“ (AAA §24)
The OpenAid Project aims to improve transparency and accountability not only of single organisations, but of the overall aid system, with a special focus on German development agencies.
- We promote the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) because we are convinced that this international initiative has the potential to significantly improve access to standardised aid information and thus to strengthen coordination, cooperation and the fight against corruption.
- We promote open data in development cooperation. We are convinced that the wealth of data and other forms of information in development cooperation can only be fully used, if it is accessible in machine readible formats and re-used based on open licences.
- We promote feedback processes at project level based on open information flow and innovative technology.
Our activities
- We raise awareness about open data, transparency in the digital age and the International Aid Transparency Initiative through events, training workshops, information material and through direct talks with development agencies, parliamentarians and development experts.
- We build data based tools to improve the fact base in development cooperation, to encourage data-based analysis and to illustrate the value of open data.
- We establish a network of experts and enthusiasts of open data and transparency in development cooperation to promote a culture shift in German development cooperation.
- We offer consultancy services to individual development agencies to publish their data in open formats, to improve internal use of data and to enhance feedback processes.
